What is Measure U? A ballot measure proposing a one-half cent sales tax to maintain and enhance essential city services, such as public safety, public health and wellness programs, city youth programs and street paving.
As a Richmond Resident, how much would this cost me? The average amount that would be paid per Richmond resident per month would be $2.93.
What is the existing sales tax rate in adjacent cities? El Cerrito is currently at 9.5% and San Pablo recently approved an increase of 0.25%, taking their Sales Tax rate to 9.25%. If Measure U is approved by Richmond voters, our Sales Tax rate would go to 9.5%, matching El Cerrito, and 0.25% above San Pablo.
What is the impact of specific types of businesses?
Use Tax (Automobiles)
Based on “use” and would only be applicable to Richmond residents, independent of where they purchase the automobile. Non-Richmond residents would not be charged the additional half-cent.
Wholesale (Companies who sell to retail stores)
Sales Tax is not collected by the wholesaler, but rather by the store where the final sale takes place. If the retail outlet is not in Richmond, Measure U has no impact.
Sales Tax would be collected at the 9.5% rate if the retail outlet is in Richmond.
